Experience
My love of teaching comes from my life-long love of learning. I believe that each student is unique in how they learn best and together we can discover that perspective, paving the way to success. As a classroom teacher and a one-on-one tutor (both paid and as a volunteer) for the past 8 years, I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students realize their own potential and see their test scores and grades improve. Becoming a teacher was truly the best decision I ever made. During my previous work as a pharmacist, I realized the most enjoyable part of the job was the teaching, training and patient education, so I decided to switch career paths. Currently, I am a graduate student myself and enrolled in a dual program, Master of Arts in Teaching/Post-Bac Teacher Certification at Marshall University. To my delight, I am continually discovering the latest, most effective, research-based teaching modalities in the field. For learning to occur, understanding and remembering, the material must be relatable and interesting to the student. I specialize in tutoring math and science for success in school and with standardized/college entrance exams. Whether we are working on schoolwork, honing study skills or preparing for a big test, one of my goals for each session is to keep the student challenged and engaged but never overwhelmed. I assign homework for the student after every session, and provide frequent assessments and progress reports. Monitoring student progress also helps me to continuously adapt my tutoring technique as needed. I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I often ask for feedback, and I never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring. I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 24-hr cancellation policy, I offer makeup sessions. To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I usually teach private lessons at my local public library in South Charleston. However, I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!
